BRITISH FISH AND CHIP LOVERS![]() 06 May 2009THE British fish and chip shop loving public is being asked to help police illegal fishing in the Barents Sea and North Atlantic. Tim Cartwright-Taylor, from The Frozen at Sea Fillets Association (FASFA), is calling on the public to play there part and only eat fish from their local chippies if it is legally caught. The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) has said that the illegal fishing of cod has decreased by 75 per cent in the Barents Sea, where 90% of cod and haddock for the UK’s fish and chip shops comes from. Commenting on the ICES findings, the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) said customers – including the Great British fish and chip shop lover - can now “finally” eat Barents Sea cod with a good conscience, provided the fish is guaranteed to be legally caught. Tim says: “If the British public want to continue to see their favourite fish on the menu they have to play their part in policing fish stocks. Anyone can do this by simply buying their dinner form a local chippy that sources its fish from accredited, well managed and sustainable seas like the Barents Sea.” |
