THERE IS PLENTY OF FISH OUT THEREThe UK press continues to report gloom and doom stories about the planet and particularly about fishing. “All seafood will run out by 2048 say scientists” Daily Telegraph, 3rd November 2006. Could any of them have predicted the state of the world today - in 1964? Iceland and Norway, where the majority of the cod and haddock supplies originate, are the world leaders in fisheries science and they are taking every step they can to ensure that the fisheries in their waters are well managed and will continue to provide a harvest of fish for many years to come. UK Fisheries minister Ben Bradshaw calls for closed areas to protect fish stocks in the North Sea, which has been the cause of so many of the concerning headlines. Both Iceland and Norway have been operating closed areas for many years as part of their comprehensive fisheries management regimes. FASFA have corresponded with editors and feature writers from several national publications to inform them of the true source of our fish supplies and reassure them and their readers that fish is not about to disappear from the menu. |
